About CIM CÁVADO

The Comunidade Intermunicipal do Cávado constitutes the NUT III of Cávado, and encompasses the counties of Amares, Braga, Barcelos, Esposende, Terras de Bouro and Vila Verde. CIM Cávado results from the new legal framework established by Law 45/2008 of August 27, and was constituted by a public deed granted on October 30, 2008.

The NUT is structured by the Cávado River basin and develops in the Southeast and Northeast, bordering the sea and Spain. It is a heterogeneous territory, integrating very rural counties along the sea, to very rural counties of mountain near the border, passing through very urban and dense counties like Braga. With a total area of 1245.8 km2 and 265 parishes, in 2001 it comprised a resident population of about 393 thousand people. This association captures its interests mainly in the territorial development of the region of the Cávado Valley.

CIM Cávado aims to combine, promote and articulate common interests to the associated municipalities, in the area of community outreach services, and municipal investments at the level of:

    • Promotion of the planning and management of the economic, social and environmental development strategy of the territory concerned;
    • Articulation of municipal investments of intermunicipal interest;

Participation in the management of programs to support regional development, namely within the framework of the Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional (QREN);
